The water pump went out on my 1991 US Marine Force 35 HP outboard and the motor locked up. Is there a chance I can un freeze the motor and it will still run? Thanks, Robbie

Can almost guarantee it is all done. Once they get hot and sieze, you can let them cool and get them running again, the third time you try and force them (hence the name) to go and they lock up they have transferred enough piston to the walls of the cylinder that they are done.
To prove this to your self– the exhaust cover will come right off now that it’s been super heated. There you will see the hot side of the piston. If you can get it to rotate to where you can see the end of the rings, just push in on them (thru the exhaust ports) with tiny screwdriver. If they are loose and springy, you have a chance, if the piston is all streaked with molten aluminum, I think its time to advertise for a parts motor. Should get one for about $100.

Robbie, this is not good! Try what “jtexas” said. By their nature outboard motors do not like to get locked up like that. As “Uncle Jed” said it does not look too good. Aluminum engines are a completely different breed than is the reliable cast iron engines of days gone by. In the old days of cast iron engines this would not pose a problem, HOWEVER …. And THIS we are told is progress. If this is technological progression I do not want to know what digression is. In the old days a manufacturer built things to go the distance; guess reliability and ease of maintenance doesn’t figure into the equation any more.

put a couple tablespoons TCW3 oil in the spark plug holes and let it sit awhile, try to rotate the flywheel by hand. Once you get it freed up, do a compression test, that’ll tell you whether it’s ok to run.

Pull the head and see if the piston and cylinder is scored.

You can try it but the odds its any good are slim…………..md
